Augmentation vs. Substitution

But they are useless. They can only give you answers.

– Pablo Picasso

Marc Andreessen says software is eating the world. If we look around, it certainly seems that way. I took a skim through a book called the Second Machine Age to get a grasp on the trends.

I was very interested in the trends towards replacing workers with computers. The quote above from Picasso says it all. Technology can either help workers or replace them. It can provide augmentation of human skill or substitution of human labor.

Technology is answering a lot of questions, but it can’t yet ask the right ones.
